A recent basement renovation

I have been pretty terrible at updating this blog. Wes has done some lovely work and finished some good size projects since I last posted.

Here is a recent basement renovation. The client wanted a lot of cabinet space (A LOT) but they didn't want them to look like cabinets. So no handles. There was also to be a movable wall, so they could partition an area off for privacy if they had guests.

There was also space made for their TV and sound systems, a fireplace and a built in liquor closet.

Long wall of cabinets with a smoked glass cabinet door for all the electronic components.

Another view.

Moveable wall, tucked away in its storage cabinet.
Door hinges pull shut so no need for handles or locks.

A second wall of cabinets. Sleek and clean.

Another view.

View looking back at full length of cabinets.

Hidden liquor cabinet side stair entrance.

Inside of liquor cabinet, with room for mini fridge or wine fridge.

Another view.

Custom wine rack.

A bit further

We've had some delays, Wes has been sick and I'm learning to be patient.

View from the back door looking at the front door.

All the appliances are in now! Yeah for me!
Just two small cabinets to go beside the stove.
Wes has to custom build these pieces.

I still need back splash. Then we need to finish mudding and sanding,
finish carpentry and painting. Its getting close.
Now I just need to get this family over the flu and we'll be great.

A little further along

And here we are a bit further on in the process.

Here is a view from the front door looking toward the back.

This is the new kitchen area. The island is not in its final spot.
This area is a small part of the original kitchen, the dining room and
the storage room, all opened up and combined.

View from the back door looking at the front entry.

Gavin's new small room. It is the area that used to be kitchen.

This is the view from the end of the hall, showing
Gavin's new door and the part of the living room.

During

The first stage of most renovations is demolition. The part that makes you gulp and say, "What the hell have we done?"

But the good news is, that is gets better from here.

View from the back door. There is a temporary wall
holding up the joists until the beams could be put in place.

View of old kitchen looking at new area.
The old kitchen will come Gavin's new room.

View of front door. Temporary supports hold the roof up. Safety first!

View of front door, with temporary wall down. What a mess!!

The floor needs to be patched. Tough job matching 60 year old hardwood.

Before pictures

Here are a few before pictures to try and show the layout before we started our renovation.

View from the front door to the dining room and kitchen.

View of the dining room, with hardwood laying all over!

View of the kitchen. Wes took these - if it was me I'd have cleaned the mess
that was revealed by moving the stove. But...

Dining area from kitchen and back storage area. By the way this used to be the stairs,
several years ago Wes moved the stairs and added a few feet at the back.

Latest Reno

It has been a while since I have posted. And we still haven't managed to get internal pictures of the two story addition Wes finish, so I haven't posted those pictures yet - hope to soon.

This renovation hits close to home as it is our house!! Yikes! The kitchen is coming - I'm hoping to have it functioning by the weekend. For now... here is a walk through of our progress.

First - the plans.

This was the layout of our house before this renovation.

This will be the final layout (for now - Wes is planning a major renovation in
a few years, I'm planning on moving instead!)

Basement renovations - After

Here are the after pictures of the basement development. The client wanted to do the painting themselves, so the finish carpentry hasn't been painted. They were happy with the results.
